Death Note Mania

April 19, 2009 in Anime, Books, Featured, Headline, Manga, Movies, Review, tv/series by Emerian Rich

dn1 thumb Death Note ManiaI officially have Death Note mania.  I’ve just watched Death Note Death Note Mania and Death Note Movie II: The Last Name Death Note Mania live  action movies.  These are two of the best Japanese made movies I have ever seen.  I am so in love with these films that I am recommending them to non-anime/manga fans as well, because they can stand on their own as great cinema.  For those of you who haven’t given in to Death Note mania yet, let me fill you in on a little background information.

The story of Death Note is an intoxicating one.  What if you had the power to kill criminals who somehow went free after committing horrible crimes?  You could kill murderers who laughed at surviving family members as they cried that their loved ones had not been avenged.  You could kill any criminal, even if the police couldn’t find them, as long as you had a picture and their name.  But where would you draw the line?  What would the constant killing do to you and your soul?  Death Note centers around Light Yagami, a brilliant student who stumbles across a notebook lost by a spirit of death.  This notebook enables the owner to cause death to any human as long as he can picture their face and write down their correct name.  What starts as a vigilante experiment for Light, becomes an obsession which gains him acclaim as the hero Kira.  Japan goes crazy.  dn4 thumb Death Note Mania Some people think Kira is a god, while some see him as the devil.  Soon, the famous detective known simply as “L” is called in to investigate.  You goth-lolita fans will love the character Misa Misa.  She comes into the story in manga book 4 as a blonde, punk-style lolita.  In the live action movies, she is Japanese, but still embodies the cute lolita style, just toned down a bit.

Death Note was created by writer Tsugumi Oba and illustrator Takeshi Obata.  It first appeared in 2003 in the form of a serialized manga comic in Weekly Sho-nen Jump magazine.  The series was then adapted into live action films released in Japan starting June 2006.  An anime version, a novel by Nisio Isin, and a video game followed.  Death Note has been optioned for a film produced by Hollywood, but I can’t seen them making this flick better.

ryuk thumb Death Note ManiaSince it’s release, Death Note fans have grown in the millions.  It’s become so popular that there have been many cop-cat crimes overseas and in the US.  Students in US schools have been suspended for possessing self-made death notebooks with names of their teachers and classmates inside.  In early 2005, Death Note was banned in the capital of China to, according to Beijing media, “protect the physical and mental health of it’s youngsters”.

The live action films are so right on the manga, any fan is instantly floored at the detail.  From the attitude of Light, to the eccentricities of “L”, the director of this film nailed it at every turn.  The shinigami, or spirit of the dead, is excellent animation and spooks me to the core.  I’ve always found the shinigmi, whether in the mangas or in the live action version, to be the type of creature that can make you laugh or scream.  His simple nature and love of apples make me view him as a huge skeleton-shaped stuffed animal.  But when he begins to laugh and fly up with those horrifying wings, I want to hide under the covers!  dn2 thumb Death Note Mania

These movies do have some differences in them from the comics, but they are explained well.  Although the second movie is not as good as the first, they make a nice pair.  Unlike the Harry Potter movies, these films seem to flow right into each other as if no time has passed.  You can buy these two excellent movies at a really good price right now on Amazon.com Death Note Mania.  A plus is that they are English dubbed, so you don’t have to read subtitles unless you want to.  The subtitles do not match the dubbing, so if you are hard of hearing, I suggest turning it up louder rather than using the assistance of the close captions.  I will be looking for an English dubbed version of the third movie, L: Change The World, but to warn you, the reviews are less than favorable.

The real concept of this tale leaves questions we can all ask ourselves.  When you get so obsessed with righting wrongs, where do you draw the line?  How do you know when to quit before innocents are hurt?  And if a mortal man was given the power to kill, even in the name of justice, how long would he stay good?

The Majority of the Robotech Saga has been added to iTunes, Amazon, Xbox Live, and IGN Direct2Drive.

Notice that Robotech II: The Sentinels, Flash Back 2012, Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross 7: Encore, Macross Dynamite 7, Macross Zero, and Macross Frontier are not on the list.  I realize that Macross and Robotech are not technically the same thing, but I think they belong together.  After all, Robotech was based on Macross.

Army of the Sun is one of my favorite songs from Roadrunner United, but when it is mashed up with my obsession with Final Fantasy, then it is truly something to see.

This video is visually stunning.

Mos Eisley Cantina Poster

September 3, 2008 in Anime, Fandom by Eric

Cantina

What more could I possible add to this great poster/advertisement for the Mos Eisley Cantina? This 50’s – early 60’s style of cartooning adds an interesting touch to the piece. So this is the place where all the hipsters go, or at the very least should in the Star Wars galaxy far, far away. I have to see if I can buy a print of this.

Wolverine and Iron Man Anime Series Forthcoming

August 26, 2008 in Anime, tv/series by Eric

A Quick update on my post from yesterday:

Madhouse is currently in production on the first of four new series (12 x 30 minutes), which are scheduled to launch in spring 2010. The initial series will feature characters including Iron Man and Wolverine, among others, and Madhouse will ultimately look to adapt the entire Marvel Universe, creating in essence a whole new character base for Marvel (Anime News Network)

So we now know that these are actual series, 12 episodes 30 minutes each and that Iron Man and Wolverine are 2 of the 4 in production.  I hope Doc Strange is in the mix.  I can only imagine that Anime glory that would be.

Superheroes to Be Recast for Japan – NYTimes.com

August 25, 2008 in Anime, Movies, tv/series by Eric

Marvel is teaming up with Madhouse, a renowned Japanese animation studio, to develop new versions of its characters for four anime series that will premiere in spring 2010 in Japan (NYTimes)

This is exciting and a little worrisome.  It is exciting because this is the same talent that gave us Vampire Hunter D and Paprika, but how those talents will translate into the Marvel universe is uncertain.

The success of Gotham Knight brought this partnership into being.  I am excited to see these flicks, but they are being made for the Japanese market and there is no word when or if they will be available in the States.  They have also not named the characters will turned into anime

Batman: Gotham Knight Official Trailer

March 13, 2008 in Anime, Comics by Brian Logee

The Official site went up for the Animated movie Batman: Gotham Knight. You can view it here but they don’t have any thing up yet. I hope in the future they will put up some stills to show off the art work.

This direct to DVD project introduces a new east meets west style batman in both animation and in story style. In the trailer, view here in the P:S HQ, they 61K966NG66L._SL210_talk about using a samurai style influence on the Dark Knight character. It looks interesting though I have concerns about how much influence Batman Begins will have on this project.

I can’t wait to watch this incarnation of Batman but I have doubts that they will be able to beat the best to date animated version of this classic superhero, Batman – The Animated Series which came out in 1992 – 1995.

Justice League Homeless?

February 26, 2008 in Anime, Comics, Movies by Brian Logee

What is so wrong with the filming system that the location of shooting a movie has less to do with the scenery and environment and more to do with tax incentives and lawsuits. The potential live action Justice League movie faces more troubles.

The production may be forced to depart its base in Sydney for another location because of an eligibility dispute over a tax incentive that the studio was counting on.

6151FXN5ZWL._SL210_ At this rate Miller will have to contact Martian Man Hunter to get permission to shoot the film in the watchtower. On the plus side trends like this continue to drive content creators into animation and digital productions.
