Review: Dollhouse 201 Vows

October 1, 2009 in Review, Sci-Fi, tv/series by Brian Logee

This entry is part 1 of 1 in the series Dollhouse Season 2

Overall Rating: 9.5

Ballard gets to play as a client of the Dollhouse.  He has Echo marry a British arms dealer to resolve one of his FBI cases.  Echo runs into touble as she is sporadically remembering her past imprints due to Alpha making her into Omega.  Watch the episode streaming online Below.  Dollhouse - Dollhouse, Season 2

What a great season opener.  Joss hits the ground running with Vows.  In the interview he said that he wanted this episode to explore the most messed up things possible and how did he ever.  We get to see many characters beyond Echo in messed up situations especially the conflict within Dr. Saunders.  I’m so glad the show is back.

Why do you think Ballard is at the Dollhouse?

  • Dr. Saunders v Topher conflict
  • Tempura Joe was both funny and sick use of the Dollhouse
  • Topher sleeping in the computer room makes so much sense, so geeky.  I love it.
  • Amazing acting job from everyone especially:
    • Eliza Dushku as Echo she had to flip from one character to another within seconds and made each one believable.
    • Dichen Lachman as Sierra she did a great job as a W.A.S.P.
    • Jamie Bamber as Martin Klar he kept up the accent and made for a brilliant bond villain
  • Joss’ subtle social commentary through Sierra’s scene on the unconscious raciest.
  • Joss’ commentary on excuses was poignant and insightful.  They are blamed for keeping us from doing what we want and need to do but in the end they are just excuses.
  • The tension in the conversation between Echo and Whiskey was so palatable.
  • Introduction of first antagonist for the season.
  • The scene where we get to see the art of reading someone.
  • How the episode ends with a vow, putting a double meaning into the title.
  • Topher and Whiskey’s long conversation.
  • Whiskey’s fear of dying as a personality construct.
  • We find out what Omega’s goals are.

Dislikes / Concerns

  • None it was just awesome!!!

I loved the conflict between Dr. Saunders and Topher.  I love the use of the symbolism in showing the Bride of Frankenstein and telling Topher to get the rats back into the maze.

More support for Topher and Dr. Saunders being brother and sister

  • Topher knows her from before to so deeply believe that she is better then him and to program her with questioning and fighting for her beliefs
  • Topher being beyond uncomfortable by her sexual advances.
  • They are not allowed to know each other being part of the contract.
  • There is a sadness behind Topher when he is explaining that they aren’t allowed to know each other.
  • His confusion on why Whiskey does not look into who she really is.

Do you think when echo said “I’m justice I’m blind when I need to be blind” that it was actually Caroline speaking?

What did you think about the tension in the conversation scene between Whiskey and Echo?  Knowing Joss would not have Whiskey go all Alpha with the knife I still felt the tension and in the moment genuinely believed she was going to cut Echo.

Do you think Boyd’s initial interest in Whiskey is to smooth over the conflict between her an Topher?

Discoveries

  • Echo is up to 40 personalities after the vows engagement.
  • Topher is scared of rats
  • Echo has 3 years left on her contract
  • Dewitt tolerates Echo to study her, though I suspect there is a deeper reason that will be revealed latter.  Dewitt’s interest started back with Caroline.
  • Echo admits to being Omega, being all of her personalities yet none of them are her.
  • Omega wants to find her real self and the real self for everyone in the Dollhouse
  • Ballard swears a vow to help Omega in her quest.

Gunslinger Girl by Yu Aida

Gunslinger Girl Volume One Gunslinger Girl by Yu AidaIf Jack from 24 had a cyborg decoy assistant, Gunslinger Girl Gunslinger Girl by Yu Aida would be it.

Looking for some high-action fun? You will love this manga. Although there is no horror or fantasy in this book, it is enjoyable. What’s cuter than a little girl in a school uniform sporting an uzi and shooting up terrorists? Maybe that same little girl collecting teddy bears and attempting to play the violin.

This manga raises an ethical question. The premise is that the social welfare agency has rounded up all the physically challenged girls and modified them into cyborg assassins. On the one side, these once disabled kids now have full happy lives where they can walk, go to school, and play with teddy bears. However, the government sees them as cybernetic toys -mechanical- and completely disposable. The kicker is that they also use some sort of drug to “condition” the girls to obey their handlers and risk their lives for them.

What would you do? If you could make a disabled girl walk again, but the trade up was to have them lose part of themselves mentally, would you do it? What if that girl could help track down terrorists and aid homeland security? How high of a price are you willing to put on our safety? If the quality of life is increased, must the life-expectancy be decreased?

All these questions and more will go through your head as you read this. You will also find out what happens when one of the girls starts falling for her handler.

The art in this manga is well done and has a sort of police show feel. There is one glossy color page in the front and no extras in the back.

Michael Bay added 3 new TV spots to the web to wet our appetites for the next Transformer movie.  A lot of the footage is included in previously movies but each one does have a little treat in it, that and the quality of the players is really nice.

The first video features some new transformers not previously shown in other clips:  what looks like a train transformer and a swarm of micro transformers but my favorite part is watching Devastator put himself together!

Exploring: Terminator Salvation

May 21, 2009 in Movies, Sci-Fi by Brian Logee

terminator salvation poster Exploring: Terminator SalvationTerminator: Salvation is the next installment in the Terminator franchise.  It takes place during John Connor’s freedom fighter days as he leads the resistance against the Skynet and the robot army.  In his attempt to defeat Skynet and its army of Terminators by Marcus Wright, a man who apparently has been rescued from the past, though Connor wonders if instead he’s been sent from the future as a foil to his plan. As Connor and Wright push deep into the heart of Skynet, they get closer and closer to learning the secret behind the organization’s mission to wipe humankind off the planet.

I loved the first two Terminator movies becoming a fan of the story and setting.  It was the best of both worlds great action with killer robots and good speculative fiction.  Then the third movie happened which moved the franchise away from any good “what if” and into pure boring action.  I originally had a lot of hope with this movie exploring John Connor’s adult years and getting back into the setting returning the franchise back to what made it so great… after some of the early reviews and McG’s talks that hope is swiftly slipping.

I put this one into the caution category.  I will watch it in the theater to review it but recommend for others to wait until the reviews are in.  My hopes is Terminator will turn out to be like Star Trek in quality rather than X-Men Wolverine.

Let me know what you think.  Will you go to see Terminator: Salvation  in the theater on May 21 2009 or rent it?  If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?

Review: Dollhouse 112 Omega

Review of:  Dollhouse 112 Omega  Dollhouse - Dollhouse, Season 1

Overall Rating: #10

Alpha’s obsession with Echo grows more dangerous.  Watch the episode streaming online above.

Omega is an amazing season finally for Dollhouse.  Joss Whedon succeeded in answering some of the major questions brought up in this first season while putting in many really good hooks leaving me ravenous for a second season!

This episode had a lot of Ballard, Topher, Echo, and Alpha in it.  Alan Tudyk and Amy Acker did such an amazing job acting.  Alan was able to slip from one accent, diction and body language to another as each personality slipped in and out of his character.  Those scenes made up some of the most funny, entertaining, and creepy moments in Omega.

I also enjoyed the issues tackled in Omega:  Nietzsche and his discussion of the super man,  addressing the question of is there a sole, and the general morality of what they are doing at the Dollhouse.

  • The acting was amazing epically Alan Tudyk  in changing accents
  • There are some really funny parts like when Alpha is told to watch his step.
  • There is a great creepy factor
  • There are some great effects especially the Crazy Alpha scenes and how they did them with the flashing.
  • how they solved the ending with solid detective work and not some deus ex machina type ending.
  • The subtly tense and intense moments that use previous knowledge from throughout the season to build them.
  • How Joss Whedon answeres some of the big questions like is there a soul and who is Alpha.
  • How Joss whedon sets up some great hooks for next season like what is echo evolving into, what will be Alpha’s goal?  What will Ballard do for the Dollhouse?  What is Topher’s issue?
  • Alpha’s spiel about new life from old death.

What an amazing episode!  Briar Rose has such a great balance between funny, drama, action, altruism, horror, and suspense.  I really believe that the earlier episodes of Dollhouse would have been a lot like this one if Fox hadn’t made Joss Whedon change them.

Next Week: Omega

Alpha’s reign of terror continues as his obsession with Echo endangers Caroline’s survival; Ballard must make a life-changing decision; and one Doll is permanently deactivated while another’s shocking past is revealed.

Spoiler Alert

In the scene when they use victor’s body with Dominic’s mind.  I found the scene to be disturbing not only for what is going on in it but I also wondered what does the Dollhouse do with the bodies.  What did you think about that scene?

The man on the inside.  First off I doubt that Joss will reveal who that is in this season.  I’m still stuck on who that may be but after this episode I have to move Boyd up to the top of my list.  He gave Ballard a way out even after catching him trying to free Caroline.  “I’m giving you your one chance go back the way you came.”  Why would Boyd let Ballard just walk out of the Dollhouse?

On to Alpha.

  • He has a lot of mannerisms and conversation style like Topher.  Do you think they are related in some manner or do you think Topher’s mind is one of the multitude that makes up Alpha’s composite?
  • Alpha is a sociopath:  The evidence is in the scene where he is admiring cuts he did on Dr. Saunders like it’s art work.  He takes so much pride in it.
  • Alpha and echo have a thing where she was waiting for him to come and wake her from her sleep like Briar Rose.  In Omega we should find some answers to this but what do you think?
  • Why did Alpha have the conversation with Doctor Saunders?  I think it is because he wants to know more about who he was before he became a doll and Alpha beleives the Dr. Saunders knows more than she is telling.  I think this may be why she is still alive because she still serves a purpose in Alpha’s mind.

Discoveries

  • Alan Tyduck is Alpha
  • The center is located in Tucson AZ

Review: Dollhouse 110 Haunted

April 28, 2009 in Review, Sci-Fi, tv/series by Brian Logee

Review of:  Dollhouse 110 Haunted  Dollhouse - Dollhouse, Season 1

Overall Rating: 9

When Adelle’s wealthy friend is murdered, Adelle imprints Echo with the woman’s memories..  Watch the episode streaming online above.

Dollhouse Haunted is another one of those episodes that really features Joss Whedon’s brilliance.  He boldly deviates from the typical Dollhouse episode format in this episode.  This one is a mystery episode but more like playing the game Clue where we have a murder victim Margaret but we need to find out who did it and with what weapon.  The list of suspects:  her son Nicholas, daughter Jocelyn, brother William, or her husband Jack.  As interesting as that storyline was though I wished that Joss would have made that the secondary storyline and spent more time on Topher’s annual anterior insular cortex diagnostic.

The annual anterior insular cortex diagnostic is a test (indulgence) that Topher does annually.  It requires a doll that Topher does an imprint to so that he can spend the day with a friend.  This part was disappointing, not because they did it but because it was like sitting just out of earshot of a very important conversation where we could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation.  Enough that we knew we wanted to hear the whole thing but not enough to know what was going on only to speculate.  Who was imprinted into Sierra?  Was it another Topher, a created ideal friend or was it a lost loved one from Topher’s past?  Is it actually for Topher’s Birthday or is it for some other annual celebration?  For season two I want Joss to do an Anterior Insular Cortex Diagnostic Day episode with Topher as the main storyline and have something else as the sub storyline.

Haunted touches on the subject matter of life after death.  They put a client’s mind into an actives body where they have all of the memories and personality quirks but they only remember up to the last session so in the case of this episode she does not remember the last 3 weeks of her life.  My question for you is do you think this is a temporary process?  Boyd also asks the question: Where does it End?  That is to say with this application of the technology how far is an organization willing to go with it?

For what reason do you think Dewitt is very set on separating Echo and Ballard?

If you could play with the sleepies, what would you have them do?  For instance:  would you have them battle gladiator style or act our skits, film it and see who gets the most hits on youtube.  I would have them reinact favorite scenes like the hockey scene in Strange Brew Review: Dollhouse 110 Haunted or the boarding battle in the beginning of Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope Review: Dollhouse 110 Haunted and sweed them like in Be Kind Rewind Review: Dollhouse 110 Haunted.

  • I love the fight choreography.  It was sloppy taking into account that neither fighters had any kind of training or a background in fighting.
  • This episode was kind of like a game of Clue.
  • Paul Ballard and Millie are so cute together it’s torture to watch them.
  • Eliza Dushku can ride English saddle!!!
  • I love it when Boyd goes Hmm he does it often when thinking, it makes me think of Rorschach from the Watchmen.
  • The questions raised on incest: What did you think about Nicholas kissing Julia?
  • Annual anterior insular cortex diagnostic
  • Bring up question about life after death
  • The list of classic Sci-Fi mistakes: human alien cross breeding without scientific intervention, flame-y explosions and sound in a vacuum.
  • The list of good storytelling: light speed travel, space storms, and sexy sexy alien.
  • New games from Topher:   Flying chess it is a real game, chess drinking game every time you loose a piece you take a drink.

Dislikes / Concerns

  • The rider-less horse was beautiful imagery but not accurate because a horse who loved it’s rider would stay with them.
  • Wanted more Topher: This episdoe should have been Topher centric story with Margaret’s storyline as a subplot.

Hunter Prey teaser trailer

April 27, 2009 in Movies, Sci-Fi, Space Opera by Brian Logee

The teaser is out for Hunter Prey watch it above.  The movie is about a team of special forces commandos who must recapture an escaped alien prisoner after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet.

I love the look of the commandos… they really give me a Star Wars bounty hunter kind of feel.  This is enhanced with the retro-70’s style that the film is going for.

Sandy Collora directs the independent Sci-Fi film.  She used a more streamlined approach to the movie keeping the budget down.  First she used an 18 day shooting schedule and she used the Red camera system.  The RED camera system which could revolutionize the filming process because it promises to give the same quality but costs as much to buy as it is to rent the camera systems used for movies today.
