Captain America’s in prep:

Joe Johnston gives some updates on Captain America:

    • “We’re in prep,”
    • The film, he says at this early stage, will begin “in 1942, 1943″ during World War II. “The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we’re sort of avoiding.

I like hearing that they are at least considering beginning Captain America during World War II.  I wonder how much of the film will be about the super soldier program?

The First Avenger: Captain America “Raiders meets Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan”?

August 11, 2009 in Movies by Eric

Captain America
Image via Wikipedia

[Louis Leterrier describes The First Avenger: Captain America as] “a period piece”like Raiders of the Lost Ark but “with more gadgets…” He later clarified, “It’s Raiders meets Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan.” Which makes sense since Captain director Joe Johnston was the art director on Raiders, and the director of The Rocketeer (/Film).

Wait, what?  Is Leterrier serious?  As soon as I saw this headline one thing stood out screaming, “STOP!”

  • Raiders of the Lost Arc, great movie!
  • Saving Private Ryan, great movie!
  • The Rocketeer?!?  Did anyone like it?

I loved the idea of The Rocketeer, but after I saw the movie… um… uh… let’s just say rocket packs were removed from my imagination for a while.

Even with the jaw dropping bad movie added to the high concept description,  The other 2 make me want to see this flick.  Let us all cross our fingers and hope it is more Raiders than Rocketeer.

The Avengers Reborn into Heroes of Tomorrow

August 15, 2008 in Movies by Brian Logee

The Next Avengers Heroes of TomorrowThe Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow is fifth in a series of animated Marvel Comics movie by Lions Gate Entertainment.  It will be released on September 2, 2008.  The first sneak peek of the film was featured on the Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme animated movie but was under the name Avengers Reborn which sounds much cooler.

I’m excited to see this one because they did such a great job with the other movies.  That said I also have some concerns.  This movie has a PG ratting instead of the usual PG-13 rating that the other movies have.  I hope that they didn’t dumb down the story or make it too kidsy to get the PG rating.

Plot / Story: The Avengers united to protect earth against evil and after defeating earths enemies they returned to their personal lives. They fell in love, had children Captain America and Black Widow had a son, Thor had a daughter, Black Panther had a prince, Hawk Eye a son, Giant Man and Wasp had a son.

Ultron arrives on earth wanting total domination but the Avengers stand in his way. One by one with his knowledge of their weaknesses he defeated each avenger. They hid away their children from Ultron to have hope for the future.

Now with the hope of the future in their hands Iron Man and The Hulk must raise and train the children so that one day they may unite the Next Avengers and overthrow Ultron.

  • Voice Actors: Tom Kane, Dempsey Pappion, Aidan Drummond, Brenna O’Brien, Fred Tatasciore
  • Director: Jay Oliva
  • Studio: Lions Gate

As a little side note Giant Man is the scientific genius Hank Pym also known as Ant-Man.  So no worries he and Wasp have a son.

The Avengers Program Who Will Make The Cut

June 25, 2008 in Movies by Brian Logee

Get your copy of The Avengers animated movie here The rumblings of a special team being put together has received some new light recently.  With mixed results from the super soldier program Marvel sheds some more light on their Avenger project.  They really proved their capabilities to handle this project with Iron Man and The Hulk.  So now we are left wondering who will be in the avenger movie?

The lineup has changed some as they are working on the individual film but Favreau tells us that “The ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man.”

He left out Nick Fury, I hope it is only a slip up because Samuel Jackson was awesome as Nick Fury in the cut scene after the credits in Iron Man.  He didn’t get to show up in Hulk other than in name.  Then again I don’t expect him to have his own movie but I hope to see him have some cameo roles in the future films.

Iron Man was in theaters in May

Hulk just came out in theaters

Thor is scheduled for June 4 2010

Ant-Man doesn’t have a time set yet for the film but he could be placed into the Iron Man 2 film scheduled for April 30 2010.

The First Avenger: Captain America: May 6 2011

It’s all still a ways off so we will have to see what changes between now and then.  One of my concerns is how much will the Avengers movie cost if they have a full cast of headlining actors & actresses?  This could be the limiting factor on any Avenger movie where they will have to do something either getting them to share more of the cut of the film or to have a smaller number of superheros in any given film.  I found it interesting when Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president of production, put forth the idea of “heroes can cross into each other’s adventures and occasionally team up if there’s a foe too great for any one of them to handle.”  This could be a way to have Avengers films with out having to have more then a few headliners in any one film and to maintain a sense of setting consistency.

I applaud Marvel Studios for taking on such a large project in a fan friendly manner and for not trying to cut corners.  I do not envy them for having to make some very hard choices regarding how to fit in a ton of superheros into an avenger film which is what I would love to see yet staying within budget for talent costs and to have enough money left over to make sure that the effects look great.  Good luck, and God speed, I eagerly await the next project.
