Did Darken Rahl fell in love with Kahlan

John the Rogue Demon Hunter posed an interesting question on Project: Shadow.

On the show that is. I think he was initially taken with Kahlan when Giller was torturing Kahlan and she still wouldn’t back down. This may have been why he flinched during Giller’s ministrations. Also, the blood rage was powerful enough to make him run for his life. I think he was intrigued with her to start and this was why her wanted to voluntarily become his queen. I think becoming the mother of his child solidified his feelings. I would like to seen a episode arch in the show where we saw over time Kahlan’s effect on Darken Rahl and maybe seen him starting to change his ways. That is until Kahlan tries to kill his son. At least for episodes should have have been dedicated to the future storyline.

It is an interesting idea.  I said on The Confessed, I didn’t feel Darken Rahl was truly evil, just extremely off the mark on how to best achieve his goals.

Granted, it looks like they have proven me wrong with the season premier for season 2, but I drew heavily on the Darken Rahl’s reaction to Kahlan’s torture as proof of his character.

I don’t want to bring the books in here.  The show has forked significantly from the novels, and I think we need to take Legend of the Seeker as a show inspired by the novels, rather than based on it.

Darken Rahl respects and admires strength.  Rahl saw these qualities in Kahlan, and I think he saw something else: A means to escape the Keeper.

Darken’s infatuation with Kahlan showed him the say to gain the power he wanted.  The Keeper did not rise in the future, why? Because Darken lost the boxes on Orden an gained something he ever had before.  A life of his own.

Kahlan offered Darken a world at peace and security.  All of the threats to him had been removed with Richard’s death.  He didn’t need the Keeper anymore.

Kahlan was Darken’s salvation.

Legend of the Seeker Season 2 Premiere Episode Sneak Peek

June 24, 2009 in tv/series by Eric

Legend of the Seeker: Zedd and RichardCurious about what season two might bring.  Here is an interesting look at a writers draft dated 6/15/09 for an episode titled “MARKED.”  Caution I give as much creedence to the draft as I would a rumor, in other words, take it with a grain of salt because even if it is a legitimate draft it’s a draft and is subject to many changes before the final product.  That said, it is still a fun and interesting read.

ABC’s official description for season 2:

“At the end of the first season, Richard succeeds in his quest to defeat Darken Rahl, but it remains to be seen whether or not he has truly been destroyed. Richard will soon discover that, in defeating Rahl, he inadvertently opened a rift into the underworld, and he’ll have to deal with those consequences as a war is waged on the living.”

What we might get:

  • Infighting amongst the goals of the Sisters of the Agiel… will they serve the ghost of Rahl or the next in line to take the throne Richard.  (I love the part in the draft where Trina uses the fact that the Agiels still have power as proof that the blood line of Rahl still continues)
  • The discovery that Richard is of the blood line of Rahl
  • The haunting of Darken Rahl as he serves his master the Keeper of the Underworld and it’s quest to conquer the living.
  • Cara joining up with Richard

Legend of the Seeker Season 2: Rivals and the Underworld

Richard and Kahlan kiss in the water

Richard and Kahlan kiss in the water

Two juicy tidbits of news have dribbled out about Season 2 of Legend of the Seeker:

We’re told there’s going to be a rival for Richard’s affections (La Legende du Sourcier).

We left off with Richard successfully defeating Darken Rahl, but it remains to be seen whether he succeeded long-term. What? Defeating Rahl opened a rift into the underworld, which means Richard must contend with a war waged on the living (Sword of Truth).

Sounds interesting!  I cannot wait to see it!

Legend of the Seeker: Darken Rahl and Hitler

April 16, 2009 in Featured, Headline, tv/series by Eric

Darken RahlI commented on the relationship between Darken Rahl and Hitler on our podcast, The Confessed, and seek77 had an interesting comment:

hey there!! i love ur podcast, in fact im listening to it right now (3rd episode) and i have to say, i agree with u guys in almost everything. I wanted to write to u guys to correct u in just one minor big detail, not that related to LoTS but to Hitler…. i am part of the Richard & Kahlan forum and i was the one that agreed with you guys about how Darken Rahl is similar to Hitler… well in podcast u mentioned how Hitler’s mom had a lot of husbands and one was jewish, etc. I have always been interested in the Holocaust and i had to study Hitler’s life and well u made a mistake. Hitler loved his mom and hated his dad. His dad abused him but he wasnt jewish, he was raised by a jewish family and he used that excused to hate them. it was his father the one that had more than one wife, the mother had (not sure) just one husband… Now going back to LoTS/ Wizard’s First Rule. Darken Rahl always talked about his father and how much he loved him in the book, that hasnt been mentioned in the show at all…. which i think its ok because that would make the show more complicated.

anyways, sorry this comment is so long!!! besides that i thing u guys are doing an AMAZING job here! i think u guys analyze things in a new and refreshing way, please keep doing it!

P.S eden was great!! i lover her input in the show, glad to have a girl in the show!

Thank you so much for the clarity on Hitler’s youth.  I like long comments, especially when they are so insightful.  I was basing my comments on what I had been taught in school, and it is good to have the a better understanding of one of the most interesting villains in the history of our world.

Let me clarify what I was trying to say about the parallel between Hitler and Darken Rahl.

Personal Problems Writ Large

Hitler’s childhood caused him to hate the Jewish people, that hate caused him to start the Holocaust.

Darken Rahl hates the lack of peace in soul.

  • He would do anything to find peace in himself.
  • His inner turmoil is feed by the lack of peace in the world.
  • If there is peace in the world, that could (in his mind) bring peace to himself.
  • He will do anything to bring about peace in the world.

In both of these men, what we see is personal internal struggles being fought in the outside world.

Legend of the Seeker: Conversion: Darken Rahl and Richard

Boxes of Orden and the Confessor’s Power

This is why Rahl is obsessed with the Boxes of Orden and gaining the powers of a Confessor.  These powers to control others is emblematic of the power he wants to have over his own inner turmoil.

If he can gain these powers, he thinks he can bring peace to the world and to himself.

Rahl and his father

While the relationship between Rahl and his father has yet to be mentioned on the show, I have hopes that it still might be.

Thank You…

…for not giving any spoilers from the books.  I try to do that, and I am glad that you did too.

And thank you for the kind words and about the show.  Eden is a valuable part of the podcasts, and I just know she is going to blush beet red when she sees your comment.

We will keep doing our part, and as always, thank you for you all for all of your insightful comments.
