U.S. version of ‘Torchwood’ for Fox

January 27, 2010 in tv/series by Eric

Jack Harkness
Image via Wikipedia

Cold chills ran through my body when I saw this… and not the good kind either:

Exclusive: Huge news for sci-fi fans: Fox is developing a stateside version of the U.K. hit series “Torchwood.”

Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, “Torchwood” fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies’ producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show’s first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.).

Also, some of the current cast — most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness — might star if Fox orders “Torchwood” to pilot (The Live Feed | THR).

I don’t know whether I should laugh, cry, or scream.  Maybe all three simultaneously.

Dear God, not Fox!

If any other network were involved, I might be excited about this, but Fox is where scifi goes to die…

The only shows that Fox allows on their network are reality shows, torture porn, and flat formulaic trash.  Any original show, ahem Dollhouse, gets canceled quickly.  Unless Glee is not a fluke, and the network is opening up to other original ideas, this is very dangerous.

Goodbye Jack Harkness

Despite rumors to the contrary, American media is not that friendly to GLBT characters.  If Torchwood goes to Fox, expect Jack to be retooled.

Help us, Russell T Davies, you’re our only hope!

I can only hope that Davies will fight for the series and the result will be as good as the American Queer as Folk.  O, please Fox, don’t mess this up!

Joss Whedon Directing An Episode of Glee

November 13, 2009 in Uncategorized by Brian Logee

glee 294x300 Joss Whedon Directing An Episode of GleeJoss Whedon has agreed to direct one of the back nine episodes that Fox just ordered. -EW

This comes as bitter-sweet news since Fox will be canceling Dollhouse.

Sweet

Joss is a big fan of Glee which comes as no big surprise for several reasons.

  • The show rocks!
  • The music is great
  • The messages behind the story is both challenging and edifying

I’m stoked to find Joss is directing an episode. He is brilliant director who also shares in a passion for music. His episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Once More, with Feeling Joss Whedon Directing An Episode of Glee and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Joss Whedon Directing An Episode of Glee are testaments to his acumen in that field. Personally I hope the episode he directs is the one where Will and Finn find out that they have been lied to about their fatherhood.

Bitter

The bitter part of this news is that it comes out on the back of Fox’s announcement of canceling Dollhouse. I have been silent so far on this subject because I feel a long string of expletives wont solve any thing.

If Fox thinks this move will appease the fans for all of the BS over Dollhouse then they are more foolish then originally believed. There is a coming storm but Fox will find it a quiet one. Fox doesn’t respect Joss, they don’t respect the fans and so I will not support them. They are lucky that Glee is over there it’s the last Fox show I watch. They should thanks their lucky stars that they didn’t cancel Glee like they originally wanted to before it got a chance to air.

On the plus side Joss is free of them once again and I hope that he goes independent with Dollhouse or at least with his next project. I can’t wait for Doctor Horrible 2 and other projects out of Joss Whedon Digital Studio.

NBC and Fox want to kill Hulu!

June 4, 2009 in Decabling, tv/series by Eric

Image representing hulu as depicted in CrunchBase
Image via CrunchBase

During a talk at an Internet Week event the other night, News Corp.’s chief digital officer, Jonathan Miller, suggested some of Hulu’s content might become available only to subscribers. Miller’s comments echoed NBC CEO Jeff Zucker’s words at the D7 conference last week where he said that a Hulu subscription was a possibility (New TeeVee).

Hulu is successful because it is like broadcast TV, free to anyone who picks up the signal… If Fox and NBC get their way, there are some people who will pay, but the majority will go back to P2P for their free TV.

How Paid Content on Hulu Might Work

The only way I could possibly see this working is if they left the standard definition content (up to the hi-res) free for anyone to watch and made the high definition (HD) a paid extra.  I think the hi res video is good enough to keep most people on the site, but the extra cost of sending HD video could be subsidized by those who really want it.

The only other way I could see this working is if they offered a commercial free Hulu as a paid service.  That is something even I might pay for.

If they make all of the content for pay, then Hulu will quickly go out of business.

The “Good” News

Hulu says they have no plans to switch from their free model to a paid one..  Cold comfort, but I’ll take what I can get.

Clearing up the F.U.D. about Dollhouse

April 9, 2009 in Featured, Headline, tv/series by Eric

Right off of the high of learning Felicia Day would be on Dollhouse (here), the F.U.D. (Fear Uncertainty Doubt) about Dollhouse’s future began:  We learned that episode 13, “Epitaph One” will not air on Fox (here).  Now, we have a little more information.

“Epitaph One” has Felicia Day in it

feliciaday 150x150 Clearing up the F.U.D. about DollhouseMan, day getting worse and worse. Found out my Dollhouse ep, #13 isn’t gonna air. Only on DVD. Such a great part too. Thx Fox. :( (see tweet)

So now we know that “Epitaph One” is the episode that Felicia Day is on, and that this is the episode that is not getting aired.

The furor over this announcement surrounds what Kevin Reilly, Fox entertainment president, said on January 13, 2009:

we’re going to let the show play out for 13 episodes and hopefully it will catch on … if we can do some business there, that would be a great thing for the future (The Hollywood Reporter).

What is Episode 13 anyway?

Sites like Wikipedia and EpGuides list “Omega” as Episode 12, which is technically accurate as it will, in fact, be the show’s 12th episode to air. Said sites also, however, list an Episode 13, titled “Epitaph One (Hitfix).”

So, let’s step back for a moment.  On Speculative Fiction Today this afternoon, I mentioned that this might be a fight between two Foxes (here).  It is looking more and more like this is the case.

Epitaph One

The “Omega” episode is the 13th episode of that original order. It is the second part of a heavily-arced two-part closure to the season and it was written, produced and directed as the season finale. It brings the slow-developing Alpha storyline to a climax and answers a number of questions about the Dollhouse and its inhabitants. It also raises possible questions setting up a possible Season Two, but it isn’t a shocking cliffhanger.

“Epitaph One” was ordered by 20th Century Fox TV, the show’s production company, but not by the network and the network had no commitment to air that episode (Hitfix).

This is Fox Television’s official story, and it is a strange story.

Why would 20th Century Fox TV order an episode they had not sold?

That is really the question.  If, in fact, 20th Century Fox TV produced 14 episodes of a series that was only picked up for a 13 episode run, that would be exceedingly odd.  Media companies guarantee income from the series they make by selling them to the companies that air them, but it isn’t the only way they make money.  Media producers also have DVD, digital sales, and digital streaming to fiance their product.

So why would 20th Century Fox TV produce more episodes than they sold?

Clerical Error

20th Century Fox
Image via Wikipedia

Don’t laugh, this is the most likely answer.

  • Fox TV says they ordered 13 episodes starting at the pilot.
  • 20th Century Fox TV produced 13 episodes staring at The Pilot through “Epitaph One”
  • Fox TV made them re-shoot The Pilot
  • Fox TV counts the pilot as 2 episodes: “The Unaired Pilot” and “Ghost”
  • 20th Century Fox TV counts the pilot as 1 episode

What seems to be at work here are two different methods of accounting the number of episodes produced.

Safety Net

I think there is a good change that Joss Wheadon wrote and produced “Epitaph One” to ensure that if the show only got one season, there would be a sense of closure.  He made this series like he did Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it is a contained story in and of itself.

Remember, the plot arc was set prior to the re-shoots for the pilot.

My Tin Foil Hat Theory

I doubt this is true, but I love to get a little conspiratorial from time to time.

  • What if Joss talked 20th Century Fox TV into producing an episode that could not be aired on television for contractual reasons.
  • The episode would only be available via digital download and streaming.
  • To hype interest in the episode, they cast Felicia Day in that episode.
  • What if this is a test to see if Dollhouse requires a television network to make the production company money?

I know this is not very likely, and if it is true, he should have told Felicia (or she is playing us all), but it would be a perfect way to test a large production like this.

We know that Joss is tired of dealing with the networks.  We know he really enjoyed making Dr Horrible’s Sing-along Blog.  This could be a bridge from old media to new media.

(sigh) I know it is not very likely.  It would be cool to see Joss free from the network.

Dollhouse is not Canceled

wheadonesque twitter Clearing up the F.U.D. about DollhouseTo clear up any confusion: Dollhouse has not been cancelled. It’s just that Fox will not air the last episode of season one. (see tweet)

Will “Dollhouse” eventually be cancelled? I can’t tell you that today. I can tell you to look at the show’s ratings. If you just look at overnight and Fast National figures, that will probably tell you that hopes are bleak for a second “Dollhouse” season. If you look at DVR and iTunes and other ancillary numbers, it might offer hope (Hitfix).

We really don’t know what the future of the series will be.

This is a series that has shown rabid fan support on a network that doesn’t understand how to treat it’s audience  right.

The nature of media is changing.  Dollhouse has an audience in new media, and should be produced for us.  It is designed to be watched over and over again without commercial interruption.  I think it would be great if Dollhouse became the first Hulu exclusive show.

Is the news about “Epitaph One” Good?

Not at the moment.  If fans have to wait to see the episode until the DVD box set comes out, that is obnoxious, but if Fox TV doesn’t want to give the series a sense of finality, that does raise hopes for a second season.

If they post the episode to Hulu, make it available at iTunes and Amazon, and use it to show how the series doesn’t need the network,  I would pleased.

UPDATE: Preorders open on the DVD

The DVD and Blu-ray release of Dollhouse drops on July 28, TVShowsonDVD.com reported. The discs will contain all 13 episodes—”Ghost,” “The Target,” “Stage Fright,” “Gray Hour,” “True Believer,” “Man on the Street,” “Echoes,” “Needs,” “A Spy in the House,” “Haunted,” “Briar Rose,” “Omega” and “Epitaph One”—as well as the original unaired pilot episode, “Echo,” the site reported. (Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders for the DVD.) (Scifi Wire)

Review of:  Dollhouse: Man On The Street Dollhouse - Dollhouse, Season 1

Echo and Agent Ballard come face-to-face for the first time.  This was the best episode yet… Joss really steps up the pace on the story and really intensifies the situation.  Watch the episode streaming online above.

  • Get to see a fight between Ballard and Echo… who will win… I’m not telling.
  • See how to handle a handler.

Review: Dollhouse 105 True Believer

March 18, 2009 in Review, tv/series by Brian Logee

Review of:  Dollhouse: True Believer s1 ep5  Dollhouse - Dollhouse, Season 1

Overall Rating: 9

Echo infiltrates a cult to help the ATF gather evidence in order to shut down the cult in this very emotional and moving episode.  The one word summary of this episode is crazy.  True Believer climbs to my second favorite episode right behind The Target.  Watch the full episode streaming online above.

What we learn

  • We get to see one of the critical clients that help to explain how the Dollhouse is staying off the grid.
  • get to like Paul Ballard more as he gets cast in a charming light.
  • New Tech: Cortical Stimulation for Evocation of Visual Perception
  • For those who get queasy especially around eye surgery brace yourself but there is a one minute part where they show the start of a procedure that looks very real and could make you squirm.
  • I loved the story behind Echo’s active as a blind hitchhiker moved by God to find and join the cult.
  • Eliza Dushku did an amazing job acting in this episode I was a little choked up and very moved during the scene when Echo tells the story of why and how she got to the cult.
  • The dolls continue to show examples of behavior that they shouldn’t.  Is this just activity that would be found in the more primitive part of the brain… man reaction what a great and hilarious turn of phrase.
  • I love the choices Joss made with this story line… there are so many tempting directions this story could have gone in and he chose to make this a much more touching and sympathetic direction.  He also put in some really good twists.

dollhouse 300x115 Review: Dollhouse 105 True Believer

Spoiler Alert

I loved the beginning part when Adelle is talking with a senator about the irony of hiring an active to infiltrate a cult of brainwashed worshipers.  I also like how they use senators to keep themselves off of the grid.

I liked the plan of not only making Echo blind in order to engender trust amongst the cultists but they also turn her eyes into a human camera.  The CSEVP (cortical stimulation for evocation of visual perception) uses the eyes as lenses.  Images will bypass the cortexes, captured by the camera and broadcast those images to a receiver.

I love the part when they drop the clues that Echo is showing the same signs as Alpha before his composite event.  Do you think this is a clue that Echo could become a self actualized doll?

Dominic is an ass to Echo.  Do you think Echo will kill him and / or do you think Dominic will push her into having a composite event?  On that line do you think Dominic was the catalyst that pushed Alpha into a composite event?

What do you think they will do to Victor as part of the scrubbing action?  I’m presuming this means a wiping and reprogramming but could they put his original personality back in and let him loose?

I love how the ATF agent was the actual provocateur of the entire situation… other then being well armed do you think any thing wrong was going on at the compound?

Do you think the cult leader really had a change of heart?  Do you think he truly believes his own rhetoric?
