A-Team 2010 Trailer

March 17, 2010 in Movies, tv/series by Brian Logee

When I first heard that they were doing an A-Team movie I thought this was such a bad idea.

Then watching the trailer impressed me.  They did a good job matching up the characters and capturing the feel of the A-Team.

I grew up watching A-Team on TV.  I loved what they stood for:  justice and helping those in need.  I can only hope those elements are in the movie.

Watch the original A-Team streaming online below.

Neilsen’s Ratings: A Lesson For The Studios

December 18, 2009 in Culture, media, tv/series by Brian Logee

decabled450 300x100 Neilsen’s Ratings: A Lesson For The StudiosNeilsen put out their 3rd quarter report and there are some interesting trends I hope the studios notice.  Don’t fear online viewership it’s an asset.

…in the third quarter DVR use and online video grew 21.1 percent and 34.9 percent respectively, year-over-year, according to the latest Nielsen A2/M2 Three Screen Report.

The rise in time shifted viewership is a trend the studios need to take advantage of.  What appears to be the main resistance to streaming online content is the fear that it takes away from appointment viewership.  Although there is a slight loss due to the shift the rise in viewership is far larger then the loss.

Regular appointment TV ratings have dropped over the past decade because of:

  • Alternative work schedules / rise in 2nd and 3rd shift workers
  • Working multiple jobs
  • Rise of the MMO
  • Rise in decabled audience

Where is this rise in viewership coming from?  The audience share that has other things to do at the appointed time of the regular show.  Those who are curious about what’s on in their spare time and want to see what their friends are talking about.  Those who are decabled.

I hope the studios realize that their cash cow isn’t dying it’s just started feeding in several different pastures.

Could Hulu Be in Trouble?

December 7, 2009 in tv/series by Brian Logee

Some sad news out, GE is moving forward on a deal between Comcast and NBC.

Hulu, LLC

Image via Wikipedia

Under the terms of that deal, Comcast would own 51 percent of the new entity, which would combine NBC Universal’s broadcast network, theme parks, movie studio, and cable-television channels USA, Bravo, CNBC and MSNBC with Comcast cable networks E! Entertainment, Versus and Golf Channel.

What does this mean for Hulu?

Hulu would then have 2/3 of their owners more interested in the company going away rather then succeeding.

Comcast is interested in keeping the public watching appointment TV and paying for a cable bill, putting their interests against Hulu.

Disney owners of ABC have a long history of ownership issues which is only furthered by the odd change in Hulu’s direction with their acquisition this year.  This season’s lessening of Hulu with many shows on a one week delay and the things going down with yanking Eastwick.

I’m not so concerned that Hulu would get shut down overnight.  What I do see as a possible future is a slow corruption in the quality of the product.  Lessening and restricting Hulu from making the advances necessary to grow it’s audience share.  This would allow it to become insignificant and to fade away.

With hope I want to believe that Hulu’s success will keep them from taking this great product away from everyone.  Hope is not enough.

How do we move forward?

What steps do you recommend we take to help the big studios see the value in offering shows streaming online and the value in services like Hulu which can aggregate those shows into a good player?

Sanctuary Season 2

October 7, 2009 in Fantasy, tv/series by Brian Logee

Sanctuary season2 Sanctuary Season 2The Sanctuary is a place of refuge, a safe haven, for those that are different from humans.  Known as Abnormals they are non-human intelligent creatures and humans with genetic variants.  They range from the cute to the extremely dangerous.

Dr. Helen Magnus, a 157-year-old English scientist, and her team of experts run the Sanctuary.  They try to help the Abnormals and learn from them.  Working toward a peaceful existence between the humans and the Abnormals.

The show follows the adventures of Dr. Magnus and her staff as they struggle to bring harmony between the world of the humans and that of the Abnormals.  This difficult task because of the more dangerous Abnormals like Vampires and Nubbins is complicated further when the Cabal goes on the move.  A shadow organization with desires to spark a war between the humans and Abnormals the Cabal desires to see the extinction of all Abnormals.

Sanctuary is a great contemporary fantasy show with a polder society full of a wonderful array of exotic creatures.  I loved the episode with the Yeti, their portrayal of vampires and werewolves.  Sanctuary is also not afraid to tackle those social issues which makes for great speculative fiction, never being afraid of asking what if and exploring it thoroughly.

Sanctuary was originally an independent production which used a web publication model.  After their first season became a big hit the show was bought up by Sci-Fi channel.  They did some re-writes did some new shots and aired what is now referred to as the first season.

Looking Forward at Sanctuary Season 2

  • Finding out what happened to Ashley Magnus, who changed after being kidnapped by the Cabal at the end of the first season.
  • Many more Abnormals including an oil rig extraction.
  • The conflict between the Cabal and the Sanctuary heightens.
  • The Tokyo Sanctuary.

DVD Releases: October 6, 2009

October 6, 2009 in Movies, tv/series by Brian Logee

Out this week we have three DVDs to feature:  The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2, Year One, and Red Dwarf: Back to Earth.

  • The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2 DVD Releases: October 6, 2009: The Guild is hilarious, geeky, fun! Fans of RPG’s and MMORPG’s will love this show. I first got into it because Felicia Day rules and am not let down. The guilds actual release was on September 29th but I did not want to miss this one. A great example of an independent production The Guild is a must own.  Watch a music video “Date My Avatar” from the Guild to get an idea of how funny this show is.

  • Year One DVD Releases: October 6, 2009: Banished from their primitive village after the tribe elders deem them too lazy, Zed and Oh embark upon an adventure-filled journey through the ancient world.  Being a Jack Black movie sparked my interest in Year One.  The trailers looked funny and now I can rent it.  If you have watched Year One let me know what you think about it.

  • Red Dwarf: Back to Earth DVD Releases: October 6, 2009: I love Red Dwarf. I started watching it on PBS as a child and have really enjoyed watching it now on DVD.  For those just getting into Red Dwarf you should really start back at the beginning since the impact and probably several jokes will be lost like Lister getting to finally go back to earth to get his Island home on Fiji.  I haven’t watched Back to Earth but eagerly await to rent it.
