SF News Bites: Avengers, Transformers 3, Conan The Barbarian and Mortal Kombat

This entry is part 2 of 8 in the series SF News Bites

Avengers

Producer Kevin Feige confirms the main characters in the Avengers movie.  “It’s three people – four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury – who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time.”  I can only hope that this movie is as good as Ultimate Avengers SF News Bites: Avengers, Transformers 3, Conan The Barbarian and Mortal Kombat animated movie.  (via Gay Sci-Fi Nerds)

Transformers  3

In the works as expected.  Currently Michael Bay is moving along with the script and scouting locations for Transformers 3: Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C.  I really enjoyed the first two Transformers movies my main concern is in the script. (via SCI FI Wire)

Conan the Barbarian

Jason Momoa has been cast as the New Conan The Barbarian.  I’m excited with that pick.  Jason’s a great guy, talented actor and can physically fill the role of Conan.  Most are familiar with him playing as Ronon Dex from Stargate: Atlantis  (via /Film)

Mortal Kombat

A Mortal Kombat redo is in the works, they have selected a writer Oren Uziel.  The hope at /Film is that he will bring more depth to the Mortal Kombat movies then the previous films.  I like the idea of adding more story depth to the Mortal Kombat movies but that can not be at the cost of loosing what made the series so great.  They are so much fun to watch.

Will Aliens Be the New Vampires?

December 12, 2009 in Movies by Brian Logee

Advertising for District 9 found on the side o...

Image via Wikipedia

With the success of recent films like the Transformers movies and District 9 (and to a lesser extent, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is the 26th highest grossing film worldwide), it seems like Hollywood is going alien crazy, giving the green light and putting a lot of alien-based stories in development — more than ever before. In a couple years, will aliens be the new vampires?  -(via /Film)

Will Aliens be the New Vampires?

No, the rise in interest in alien movies is just part of the Hollywood system.  The very same system that will also decide people aren’t interested in Aliens as much as Vampire’s.

Hollywood has a past track record for starting many projects to hedge their bet on what the next big fad will be.  Many of these projects get dumped or shelved after the sales numbers come in.

The sales numbers are not so good for alien movies.  Transformers and Indiana Jones are franchises in their own right and won’t be thought of by the studios as alien movies.

There are also a lot of superhero movie projects in the works.  Could the superhero movie be the next thing?  With such a diverse story and setting potential there is a lot more that could be explored in this area on the big screen.

Vampire movies are still bringing in a lot for the studios.  Do you think they will continue doing more of them?  I hope not, it pains me to say that but with so many bad ones out there I would like for it to be given a rest.

What would you like to see as the next movie phase?

DVD Releases: October 20th 2009

October 20, 2009 in Movies, tv/series by Brian Logee

Out this week we have three DVDs to feature:  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen DVD Releases: October 20th 2009, Blood: The Last Vampire DVD Releases: October 20th 2009Blood+: Part Two.  Do we Love It, Rent it, or Avoid Like Plague?

Owner

Renter

  • Blood+: Part Two DVD Releases: October 20th 2009 is a series based on the 2000 anime film Blood: The Last Vampire about a little girl vampire hunter.  The 2000 animated film of Blood didn’t spark my interest but the new movie that came out this year looked interesting and is a renter.  My interest in the movie is why this is a renter.  It will sit low on my rental list though I’m still unsure about it and will wait to watch the movie first.  If you have any comments on the Blood movie’s or this series please let me know.

Review: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

June 25, 2009 in Movies, Review by Brian Logee

Review of: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

transformers 2 poster Review: Transformers Revenge of the FallenOverall Rating: 10

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is everything I expected it to be… A giant robot action film and a rip roaring wild ride.  I particularly enjoyed how the story focused on the robots while Sam Witwicky’s story takes on the role of supporting story line.  The pacing is swift and the immaculate reality is maintained throughout the movie to the point that it feels like a short movie even though it runs for almost three hours.

The effects looks great, they continued and improved upon all of those wonderful little moving parts that thrilled us in the 2007 Transformers Review: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen movie.  There are many intense fight scenes that not only featured the spectacle of the fight but also demonstrated style and strategy which gave more depth.

The Plot / Story: Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about an energon source. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.

Likes

  1. The story focuses on the robots not the people
  2. The pacing is swift, follow able, and without sags
  3. Maintains immaculate reality
  4. The effects looks great
  5. I really enjoyed the comedic antics from Wheelie and the twins: Mudflap and Skids
  6. how the fight scenes also showed different fighting style and strategy
  7. Some nice emotional twists
  8. at several points in the story the writers avoided taking the obvious path with Sam’s Allspark shard.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. none, I really like this movie and will own it.
