Speculative Fiction Movies Dominate top 25

December 18, 2008 in Movies by Brian Logee

Get your copy of The Dark Knight on DVD and help support the project IMDB presented their top 25 searched for films of 2008.  They wanted to go for a ranking that was not based on box-office performance or critical assessments.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how many speculative fiction movies were on the list.

  1. The Dark Knight (2008)
  2. Twilight (2008)
  3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
  4. TR2N (2011) Tron 2, I still don’t really care for the name
  5. The Expendables (2010)
  6. Iron Man (2008)
  7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
  8. No Country for Old Men (2007)
  9. Juno (2007)
  10. Transformers (2007)
  11. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  12. There Will Be Blood (2007)
  13. Sex and the City (2008)
  14. Into the Wild (2007)
  15. Superbad (2008)
  16. Cloverfield (2008)
  17. Terminator Salvation (2009)
  18. Wanted (2008)
  19. Dragonball (2009)
  20. Quantum of Solace (2008)
  21. The Departed (2006)
  22. Star Trek (2009) This is J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek
  23. The Godfather (1972)
  24. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
  25. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

SF moves took up 60% of the chart with only 1/3 of those movies being ones that have not been released yet.

I find these search reports to be fascinating like a snap shot of what is on peoples minds and what they are curious about.

DVD Releases: December 2nd, 2008

December 2, 2008 in Movies by Brian Logee

  • wanted film poster thumb DVD Releases: December 2nd, 2008Wanted:  I love this movie James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman.  With tight action, mystery, and plot twists it’s a great example of what an SF Action film should be.  A definite owner.  You can read my full review at Exploring: Wanted
  • The X-Files: I Want to Believe: I want to believe is a good crime drama, thriller movie.  It is well written.  The beginning sets up a suspenseful mood and tension.  This is carried with an appropriate pace for this type of film through to a textbook ending that was nice but not extraordinary.  For Fans it would be a definite owner but for your first experience I would suggest renting it to make sure it fits your tastes.  Read my full review at Exploring X-Files: I want to believeThe X-Files: I Want to Believe (Special Edition)
  • Step Brothers:  The speculative aspect of this movie is weak at best, I find all of Will Ferral’s movies to be stupid yet having said that about 1/2 of them are hilarious and worth a great laugh and the other 1/2 are offensive and not worth wasting ones time on.  I heard bad things about it and had great concerns when it hit the theater.  I challenged the community to explain to me why this would be a great movie and no one could so far.  That is why I would not even recommend renting it.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian:  Based on the flawed book lacking imagination I have not even wasted my time on this one.

Exploring: Wanted

June 30, 2008 in Movies, Review by Brian Logee

wanted film poster thumb Exploring: Wanted Review of:  Wanted

Overall Rating: 10 A+

Wanted was absolutely amazing!  I highly recommend watching it multiple times.  They consistently avoided taking a cheep shot, in plot twists, fight scenes, even at the end of the movie when they could have snuck in a cheep shot they didn’t.  The movie was so well done that I left the theater not wanting for anything because I was so satisfied.  Wanted can now join the ranks of Iron Man as this years second outstanding movie.

The Plot / Story: Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is offered the opportunity to seek revenge in the murder of his father, who was an assassin. Gibson is invited by his father’s partner, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), to follow in his father’s footsteps.  Sloan’s second-in-command (Angelina Jolie) mentors Gibson training him in the arts and secrets of the fraternity.

Likes

  1. An action movie that maintained an immaculate reality throughout the movie.  It had blood and death but was done in an artful manner that neither repulsed the audience away from the screen nor did it try to pull you in.
  2. The premise is well delivered and intriguing.  There were many fascinating concepts put forth like: how they select the targets to be assassinated, the source of their powers, and trusting ones instincts.
  3. Has a nice sense of play about it’s self.  This was nice for the serious nature of the film allowing a levity that didn’t cross over into silliness.
  4. The overall movie experience is a fun, exciting ride that delivered tight action at a captivating pace.
  5. although it is a movie about assassins it still maintained a sense of justice and morality that was not preachy.  The wicked were punished.  Everyone had a solid believable motivation striving to do the right thing while trying to discern right from wrong.
  6. The soundtrack was well executed, did not overpower the movie, and enhanced the experience of the scene.  I really enjoyed the use of Trent Reznor’s song Danny Elfman - Wanted (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - The Little Things.
  7. The plot twists were well executed.
  8. The acting was well delivered.
  9. Wanted is the first time since the matrix that had a consistently artful use of the slow motion camera that made sense within the context of what was going on within the story and helped to enhance the action.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. The set up took a while:  This is a concern that some may find problematic with the film but I still enjoyed.  They established the lead, the setting, made me really care about his situation and just when I was about to think this is taking a while the story and action exploded.
  2. The movie had a training montage.  This may bother some who are watching it but I doubt many will even realize it is in there.  I found even the training montage was entertaining, not hackneyed, made sense and I did not even realize that I watched a training montage until a day latter.
  3. Main character narrates the film:  some may take issue with it because it allows the main character to directly address the audience as an audience watching a film rather then creating a sense of being in the moment.  I felt that they pulled the narration moments off brilliantly giving us a look into the psychology behind the main characters motivations with out breaching the immaculate reality of the moment.
