Clearing Up the FUD: Watchmen Sequel

February 16, 2010 in Movies by Brian Logee

watchmen Clearing Up the FUD: Watchmen SequelThe opportunity exists for a Watchmen Clearing Up the FUD: Watchmen Sequel Sequel.  The actors and actress are already contractually bound and rights are already owned.  Read more at /film for the details.  So it could be done.

Should it be done?

Watchmen Clearing Up the FUD: Watchmen Sequel as a work has such a completeness to slap a sequel onto it would do the entire project a injustice.

If Alan Moore were to do a sequel I would love to see something like this.  Use the same setting, make it a generation latter and update the underlining message to match some of the greatest global threats that we face.

Do you think a sequel should be done?  What would be our current doomsday clock?

Out this week we have five DVDs to feature:  Watchmen (Director’s Cut), An Empress and the Warriors, Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods, Coraline DVD Releases: July 21, 2009, G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1. DVD Releases: July 21, 2009

  • Watchmen (Director’s Cut) DVD Releases: July 21, 2009: This is an amazing movie and a great gritty look at our society’s social political position and a great adaptation of comic to movie.  I’m even more excited to see the director’s cut where I have hopes they will fix some minor issues I had with the film over the comic.  watch the trailer below.
  • An Empress and the Warriors DVD Releases: July 21, 2009:  A wuxia film with a great cast and fascinating premise with a woman leading an army of men in feudal China… that I’m going to have to rent.  Watch the trailer below.
  • Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods DVD Releases: July 21, 2009:  This is a re-release of the pilot for the great show Stargate SG1.  This version has some extended scenes.  They removed the nudity that was in the original version since Showtime wanted it in there and it leaves the pilot not as family friendly as they wanted it to be.  Christopher Judge also dubbed over some of his parts to help give more consistency to Teal’c.
  • Coraline DVD Releases: July 21, 2009:  I have heard good things about this movie and did not get a chance to watch it in the theaters so now it’s on my rent list.  For more on Coraline read here. watch the trailer below.
  • G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1 DVD Releases: July 21, 2009:  I grew up watching this show so I’m stoked that it is now getting released on dvd.  This is not the complete first season which would be a big negative against this dvd set but this one has a bunch of stuff in it for it’s price of 20 bucks.

DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009

March 24, 2009 in Movies, Music, tv/series by Brian Logee

Out this week we have five DVD’s to feature:  Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009, Star Wars: The Clone Wars – A Galaxy Divided DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009, Snakehead Terror DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009, 1st Bite, Leaves’ Eyes – We Came With The Northern Winds – En Saga I BelgiaWatchmen_Tales_of_the_Black_Freighter

  • Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009: I’ve been excitedly waiting for the release of this animated tale.  It features Tales of the Black Freighter which was the comic that was being read within the Watchmen storyline.  Along with that tale they included a live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owl’s powerful first-hand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. Two fan-essential stories.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars – A Galaxy Divided DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009:  The first four episodes of the animated television series.  Although I loved the episode Ambushed I don’t see buying this when latter in the fall they will release the entire season as a set or I could just get the show through Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Star Wars: The Clone Wars now and not have to wait.
For more on Clone Wars and reviews of episodes read here.
For more on A Galaxy Divided read here.
  • Snakehead Terror DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009: A bad monster movie that is so bad it’s worth watching.  a Sci-Fi original but it features Bruce Boxleitner.
  • 1st Bite DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009: I have not watched this one and would love to know if it is good if any of you have watched it but after reading the description I might have to rent it.  By the way it’s not a vampire flick but it is a supernatural horror-comedy hybrid.  Shaken by the apparent food-poisoning death of a customer, Canadian chef and restaurateur Gus undertakes a pilgrimage to Thailand, where a mysterious woman shares with him the otherworldly secrets of Thai cooking. But when Gus returns to Montreal, he discovers that the cooking secrets he thought were a blessing may be a terrible curse.
  • Leaves_Eyes_We_Came_With_The_Northern_WindsLeaves’ Eyes – We Came With The Northern Winds – En Saga I Belgia DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009: This is a must own.  Double DVD digipak edition with 4 hours of material including the concert film, a 2-hour band documentary and much more.

Review: Watchmen

March 9, 2009 in Movies, Review by Brian Logee

watchmen thumb Review: Watchmen Review of:  Watchmen

Overall Rating: 10

Watchmen is a brilliant and great example of how a movie can stay true to a story, be artful and free of bone idle Hollywood pandering.  I loved it and will watch it over and over again.  Everyone should watch this movie it will enrich their lives and make them think.  That said there are also some warnings.  It does not have a happy ending.  It does not have likable characters.  It will make you think.  Watchmen is not the film to watch if one is expecting a light or fun movie but it is a great film.

The Messages in the Watchmen:

  • costs and consequences of actions and in actions
  • why we need to be careful about what we really want and how that might effect our society as a whole
  • How each individual’s actions not only impacts themselves but the society as a whole for better or worse.

Final prognosis:  Go see it, take your friends, give yourself time to discuss the experience, watch it over and over again, it will enrich your life but if your seeking something fun then wait don’t go see it.

Likes

  1. The overall experience was a brilliant and thoughtful exploration of the human condition which makes us think about ourselves and our society.
  2. Afterward I was left thoughtful and reflective glad that our society didn’t walk down that path.
  3. visuals were stunning
  4. The music was perfect and the same from the comics.
  5. The setting looked like it came right from the pages of the comic they took great care to get everything to look good.
  6. blood and guts were at an appropriate level for the type of film but there are a couple of places it’s pushed a little far.
  7. I really enjoyed the pace for an almost 3 hour movie it didn’t feel like I was there for 3 hours.  I’m not even sure if I even blinked.
  8. The acting and casting was spot on.
  9. They stayed true to the comic with a few minor changes added 3 scenes and I was bummed there was no squid monster but with those changes the overall story was unchanged and the messages were unchanged.
  10. they kept most of the flashbacks in the film.  A few minor characters were cut but nothing to change the film from the book.
  11. I wished that the story of the black freighter was left in movie but I understand it being cut for time reasons and it helped to keep the story from becoming preachy or too dark.
  12. I was enriched and glad for the experience of the Watchmen.
  13. I was amazed that they were able to pull off nudity and sex scenes without it  becoming pornographic.
  14. loved playing “where in the world is Walter” game, that is trying to find him and Pyramid in every scene.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. I’m concerned that the typical American audience member will not be able to handle a dark story without a happy ending that will make them think about themselves and the society they are creating.
  2. They changed Rorschach from a sociopath into a psychopath by changing they way he kills the guy.  I found this bothersome because it changes some of the psychology behind the character and I don’t understand why they made that choice.
  3. I’m concerned that the audience won’t get that this is progressive speculative fiction since the characters are  not likeable and a society that is not likeable.  What makes this progressive is that the Watchmen makes the audience think about how they are interacting with their society and how the watchmen is put forth as a warning of what path not to go down.
